Part Time Firefighter Positions Available

North Tooele Fire District (NTFD) is seeking dedicated, qualified candidates for the position of Part-Time Firefighter/EMT. While this is a regular, year-round part-time position, priority consideration will be given to applicants who have availability during the summer months as the District prepares for a high-demand fire season. This is not a seasonal position; selected candidates will be expected to maintain ongoing part-time employment beyond the summer months.

Firefighters are responsible for responding to emergency calls, performing fire suppression, emergency medical care, and technical rescue operations, as well as participating in ongoing training and community engagement. This position also includes equipment and facility maintenance duties to ensure operational readiness across the District.

 Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid State of Utah Driver’s License
  • Current Firefighter I certification
  • Current Hazmat Awareness/Operations certification
  • Current State of Utah EMT license
  • Completion of NIMS ICS-100, ICS-200, and IS-700
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
    Preference Given For
    • Availability to work flexible shifts, with a strong preference for summer availability (May–September) due to increased call volume during peak fire season
    • Firefighter II certification
    • Wildland Firefighter Type 1 and current NWCG FFT2 Red Card
    • Apparatus Driver/Operator – Pumper (ADO-P) certification
    • State of Utah Advanced EMT or Paramedic license
    • Resident of Tooele County preferred
    • 2 years recent, related experience

    Additional Requirements

    • Potential candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment medical examination in accordance with NFPA 1582 standards, as well as pass a standard BCI Background check.

    BCI Criminal History Report

    • It is the applicant's responsibility to provide to the NTFD a BCI Criminal History Report dated within the last 90 days prior to the review of the application. Please note: A concealed weapons permit does not meet this requirement. This background check is obtained through the Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) at https://bci.utah.gov/criminal-records/obtain-a-copy-of-your-own-criminal-history-record/. Please submit a copy of your Criminal History report with your application. Any application submitted without a BCI Criminal History Report will NOT be considered.

    Compensation Package

    This is a non-benefitted position; however, the District offers the following compensation:

    • Competitive starting salary (dependent upon qualifications and certifications) with an increase following successful completion of probation
    • Step increases based on time in service and satisfactory performance, in accordance with District policy
    • Uniforms and PPE – provided by the District
    • Opportunities for advancement and career development through internal promotion, training, and certification programs

     Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications. The recruitment will remain open until filled.

    Work Expectations

     This is an as-needed part-time non-benefitted position. Firefighters are expected to work a minimum of 36 hours per month. The anticipated start date is April 13, 2026. Part-time schedules vary based on District needs; increased staffing needs are expected during the summer months. Employees are expected to assist in filling open shifts as needed, particularly during periods of increased call volume.

    Firefighters are expected to maintain operational readiness at all times and must be prepared to respond to emergencies including structure fires, wildland incidents, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, and hazardous materials situations.

    Physical Fitness Expectation

    Candidates must maintain a high level of physical fitness and will be required to successfully complete a Physical Agility Test as part of the selection process. While employed, firefighters are expected to sustain a level of physical readiness necessary to safely and effectively perform all duties associated with fire suppression, emergency medical response, and rescue operations.

    Community Role

    NTFD Firefighters play a vital role in serving and protecting the community—not just through emergency response, but through education, prevention, and outreach. Firefighters act as public ambassadors for safety and preparedness and are expected to engage with the public at community events, school programs, and station tours.

    Selection Process

    All candidates will be required to complete a series of evaluations including:

    • Physical Agility Test – Candidates will complete a timed series of firefighter-related tasks, including but not limited to a hose drag, stair climb, forcible entry (tire hit with sledgehammer), equipment carry, victim rescue and over/under obstacle crawl. The test will be performed while wearing full PPE and an SCBA on air, simulating real-world fireground conditions. The course must be completed in one continuous circuit without rest and will be assessed on a pass/fail basis. The time limit will be 10 minutes.
    • Oral Board Interview – A formal panel interview evaluating qualifications, background, and communication skills.
    Timeline
    • March 27 – applications due by 5:00pm
    • March 31 and April 2: Physical Agility Test and Oral Board Interview (scheduled on the same day)
    • April 3: Final Notifications and Offer Letters
    • April 13: New Hire Orientation 08:00am – 3:00pm
