Physical Fitness Expectation

Candidates must maintain a high level of physical fitness and will be required to successfully complete a Physical Agility Test as part of the selection process. While employed, Captains are expected to sustain a level of physical readiness necessary to safely and effectively perform all duties associated with fire suppression, emergency medical response, and rescue operations.

Community Role

NTFD Firefighters play a vital role in serving and protecting the community—not just through emergency response, but through education, prevention, and outreach. Firefighters act as public ambassadors for safety and preparedness and are expected to engage with the public at community events, school programs, and station tours.

Selection Process

All candidates will be required to complete the following evaluations:

Physical Agility Test – Candidates will complete a timed series of firefighter-related tasks, including but not limited to a hose drag, stair climb, forcible entry (tire hit with sledgehammer), equipment carry, victim rescue and over/under obstacle crawl. The test will be performed while wearing full PPE and an SCBA on air, simulating real-world fireground conditions. The course must be completed in one continuous circuit without rest and will be assessed on a pass/fail basis. The time limit will be 10 minutes.
Size-up Scenario - Candidates will evaluate a simulated emergency incident and provide an initial size-up, including identified hazards, tactical priorities, resource needs, and an incident action plan. This exercise will assess situational awareness, decision-making, communication, and command ability.
Oral Board Interview – A formal panel interview evaluating qualifications, background, and communication skills.

Additional Requirements: Potential candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment medical examination in accordance with NFPA 1582 standards, as well as pass a standard BCI Background check.
